Forgive me Brian ........
"Ok. I'm ready for this. I was going to let it go, but since this guy is yelling all over the place about how clever he is, I may as well let it out. He was, and obviously still is, an ARSE !! So he can have his moment of fame and the squalid money he gets from selling the sixpence on E-bay, but he will also for the rest of his life know that he was, and presumably is, a bloody nuisance. It's amazing how little imagination someone like this has. Imagine what our shows, or anyone else's, would be like if everyone behaved like this. To be honest, none of the signs that people hold up are very helpful, if they are up there for more than a moment. As a performer, your mind has to be on the music, and the best music gets made when you're getting some kind of balance between feeling what is IN the music and in your own soul at that moment, and an awareness of the audience as a whole. The audience part is hard to get right anyway. I know some performers who fix on someone they like in the audience and play to them. But I think that leaves the rest of the people who paid to see you feeling pretty left out. In an arena like the ones we are playing I try to make some kind of contact with everyone ... it's a skill which Freddie excelled at. Of course for a guitarist it's harder, because there has to be a lot of my attention spent on making sure my fingers are in the right place .... I'm playing a mixture of stuff that is 'written', and stuff which I try to pull out of my head at the time - there's a whole web of complex stuff going on in my head really... very variable. So what happens when one person in the audience tries to get a disproportionate amount of attention ? Well, firstly there's a danger that trying to deal with this pushes anything else out of my brain for a moment ... a loss of concentration which often brings some kind of slip-up ... effectively it deprives me and the whole of the rest of the audience of something which would have been better. Unless you are a performer, probably none of this will make sense to you ... but this is the view from the other side. Very occasionally someone in the audience will do something, or say something, or even hold up a banner or a sign, which DOES add to the show, a feeling of contact, love, appreciation, or whatever ... most people have an instinct for this, and are clever enough to know how to gauge what they do. Hooray! But there are always a few who have no filter. Like this guy ... something missing ... OK - to be even more specific - this guy almost ruined the entire show for me. He was holding his damn piece of paper up THE WHOLE TIME, even obscuring people's view, so every time I went forward to make contact with the front few rows, this was thrust in my face, with him yelling to draw my attention, just in case I hadn't already figured it out. It was so irritating, what I wanted to do was go over and tell him to shut the f.... up, and even try to explain to him that his behaviour was unhelpful in the extreme ... but if you get into something like this, as, for instance, Axl sometimes has, the whole audience is given something irrelevant and negative - I prefer not to go this route. In the end, on the spur of the moment, I just thought ... maybe if I give him the damn sixpence the whole thing will go away (and hopefully him too !) As I moved over there to do it, it occurred to me in a flash that this would be an opportunity to actually take the offending piece of card off him. You Dumb-ass guy, I did not steal it from you, I BOUGHT it !! And thereby bought my way out of having to clock you one. Recently there have been a few similar examples of this kind of stuff. Sometimes I go over to try to play something to someone who looks like they are into it ... something personal and special ... usually they respond in some inspiring way, which actually adds to the quality of everyone's show .... but occasionally, when they respond by yelling at me "Give me your pick " I feel nothing but disappointment. How helpful is that ? If I did, I would have thought it's fairly evident that there would be a time period when I would not be playing .... But I guess they simply do not realise ... Similarly, being on the end of the catwalk, singing a pretty damn senitive love song written by Freddie, it's great that people want to participate, and be spontaneous ... that's why I take the plunge to be out there in the midst. But if someone nearby goes over the line, yelling more and more comments, into trying to have a conversation with me when I'm trying to do the (for me fairly tricky) solo section, it really makes it very hard for me. It's just a matter of common sense. Like I say, most people have it. The more common thing is even more surprising to me. I'll be just coming up to a critical moment, a pause, and suddenly I'm aware of all kinds of stuff going on all around - a whole buzz of conversation. I look around, and they're all on their mobile phones, talking to ... someone. I can only imagine that they can't understand the difference between this kind of live experience and watching the Telly at home. They don't realize, or maybe care, that someone is actually in the same room as them trying to give them something which depends on them to succeed. It's a two-way thing, a live performance ... we are all interacting with each other. I was shocked at this for a while on this USA leg - in Europe I can usually hear a pin drop in such acoustic moments - but I've got used to it, as a peculiarly North American thing. I'd probably get culture shock if it didn't happen now ! I can see the positive side ... I'm sure many of these folks mean well ... they are calling their loved-one to share a moment ... but life On the Road sure is different these days ! Having said all this ... I'm taking it all in, and enjoying myself immensely - it really feels like a privilege ... a bonus in my life I never expected. Finally, Pete was very witty, converting the sign into "I need a pay Rise, Boss ! "- but he was also making a profound statement - which is that if everybody just demanded something special for nothing, something they had not earned in any way, how ridiculous and impossible life would be ... I wanna give my picks to NICE people !! (and I do). All I can say is ... it won't work again. "Fans" like this nobody wants. Next time he will find himself inexplicably viewing the show from the car park where he belongs ! Cheers Bri " |

O Brian não é á "toa" que menciona o Axl ....... durante a digressão deles aos EUA (no principio dos anos 90) um fulano que andava o concerto todo a tirar fotos e ele não gostou desse gesto e disse varias vezes aos seguranças para o impedirem e eles não fizeram nada; vai daí saltou-lhe a tampa e foi o proprio Axl para o meio da multidão atrás do fulano que não estava a ligar "peva" ao concerto; gerou-sse uma tal confusão que literalmente tiveram que fugir pois a bateria e guitarras ficaram totalmente destruidas pois os seguranças não seguraram as pessoas;
